THE BIRTH OF THE SWASHBUCKLERS,
p. 137
Poor weather precluded all flying the next day.
To pass the time, a punching bag and a Ping-Pong table were erected near
the ready tent. At about the same time, initial drawings of the new squadron
insignia were shown, and the pilots welcomed a bold theme from Harry Hollmeyer.
The Horse had linked the idea of Corsairs and swashbucklers from pirate
days of old to create a skull-and-cross-bones design, using the bent wings
of a banking Corsair to form the cross. A skull replaced the F4U's cowling
to "scare the hell out of Jap pilots." A longtime aviation buff, Hollmeyer
knew that Royal Air Force squadrons favored Latin mottos, and the Marines
had Semper Fidelis. He made his squadron's motto Semper Vincere: always
to conquer. Thus in the waning days of July, the Marines of VMF-214 proudly
tried on their new name-the Swashbucklers!
