We thought we were moving to the Wild West, but when we arrived
it was not really that way. I remember the "Yellow Rose of Texas"
was a very popular song. Our home at 10509 Gooding St. was considered the
outskirts of Dallas. Plano was literally a plain. There were cotton fields
near our home and Texas was in the middle of a seven year drought. There
were large cracks in the soil. What a difference from the beautiful lush
farm land, rivers and streams of Ohio. But Texas has a way of growing on
you. My youngest daughter went to Argentina with AFS. On their way there
they met many other young people from around the United States. One of
them said how much she loved Argentina, she was from Chicago and in the
United States we seem to have one culture - to which Jenny replied, "well
speak for yourself, I'm from Texas and we have our own culture!"
There is something very unique and special about Texas - give or take the summers!
